Some choices are inconsequential. Some determine the trajectory of our lives. Some we make at the expense of our soul.
Mark Twain said, “Good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment.” Having gained wisdom through hard-won experience, I’ve learned two important things about making choices. First, decision is the ultimate power. And two, Dr. Stanley Turecki said: “Nothing happens until you decide.”
Nothing. Happens. Until. You. Decide.
There were times that while I was waiting on God, God was waiting on me. He was waiting on me to make a choice to either pursue the life that was meant for me or be stifled by the one I was living.
Understanding the forces that shape our decisions is vital. When you understand that your beliefs, values, needs, and emotions influence your choices, you can make better choices. You can ask: Why am I doing this? What’s my motivation or intention? Where is this coming from? Is it reinforcing a belief, a value, a need, or emotion?
If you’re struggling with making a decision at this time, hit the pause button. If there’s doubt, choose stillness. Don’t rush forward. But on the flip side, don’t wait until you’re entirely ready to make a change, either. We can always find some excuse not to act. Just taking one step will give you the momentum to pursue the goal.
One of my favorite quotes is from mountaineer W.H. Murray:
Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiation (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves, too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings, and material assistance, which no man could’ve dreamt would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets: “Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.”
Make a decision and watch your life move forward.
